Hair Stylists' Secrets and Tricks of the Trade

Hair Stylists seem to instantly know more about our types of hair and complexion than we even do. How do they work their magic to make us look our best? How come it is so easy for them and so incredibly difficult for us when we are getting ready for work the next morning? Hopefully with these common tricks of the trade, we can learn how to generate that fresh out of the salon look without having to drop the hundreds of dollars that would normally be expected for a daily professionally salon-maintained look.

The first area to focus on when trying to get professional results at home is your arsenal of tools. Just like when you have to fix your car or your home, without the proper tools you will not get the results that you want. Here are some basics that hair stylists have known for decades.

First off, make sure that your blow dryer has a nozzle on the tip. This will give you more control while you are in the act of trying to make your locks do just what you want them to. It will also help to prevent unwanted waves.

Just as important as your dryer, also be sure to choose the correct size of brush and roller to give you the look that you desire. Always remember, the smaller that your brush or roller is, the more curl you will create. The bigger the brush or roller, the less curl you will get. Avoid frustration and disappointments from the get go, and make sure that you are using the correct size for what you want to do with your look.

One common mistake that many people make, either because of convenience or a lack of knowledge, is to work on their hair in the bathroom directly after taking a shower. This is probably the equivalent of trying to get ready in the middle of the Florida Everglades in July. The humidity from the recently used shower will wreak havoc all over your locks, leaving you little opportunity to get the look that you desire. It is best to have a separate room apart from the bathroom to get ready in. Otherwise, plan on showering the night before to avoid this problem of humidity.

Along with getting ready in a shower steamed bathroom, another interesting mistake that hair stylists tell us to avoid is shampooing our hair too frequently. Who would have thought that cleanliness would be a deterrent to getting our dos to look just the way that we want them? As it turns out, shampooing actually strips your locks of protective oils and nutrients that keep them healthy and easy to work with. There is really no hard and fast rule as to how much you should shampoo. Generally, though, you should try to go as long as you can stand without doing it. Obviously perspiration, pool water and other outside forces like dust and smoke may force you to shampoo more than you would like, but in the absence of these elements, if you can go without cleaning your hair, then do it!

Hair stylists are still your hair's best friend. Be sure to find a good one and pick his or her brain for the best methods to take care of your locks.
